Middlemarch

It interweaves the stories of several major and minor characters, focusing centrally on Dorothea Brooke--an idealistic and ardently religious young woman. Many describe Middlemarch as Eliot's finest work and a masterpiece of Victorian era literature.

In the Weekend Wall Street Journal (May 2-3, 2009), Tina Brown listed Middlemarch as one of the five best novels about the vagaries of reputation. She mentioned that this is her favorite of the five.
