Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus was published in 1818 and is considered by many to be the first science fiction novel. Started by Mary Shelley at the age of 18, the story tells of obsessed university student Victor Frankenstein who finds the secret to animating dead flesh. His creation is intended to be a beautiful, super-human being, however when brought to life it is a disgusting, frightening creature.
Frankenstein is a novel that revolves around the theme of the dangers of too much knowledge. We start off with learning about Victor, and how his brilliance and incredible knowledge lead him to the center of disaster. He moves away from his family in Geneva to Ingolstadt where he continues and pursues his studies of science. Soon he becomes obsessed with the gain of knowledge, and wants more on top of more. Victor soon wants to expand his knowledge where no human has ever before. “So much has been done, exclaimed the soul of Frankenstein—more, far more, will I achieve; treading in the steps already marked, I will pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation.”(Shelley. 3) Mary Shelley was very young when writing this novel, but shows her depth of knowledge throughout Frankenstein. Mary Shelley was very advanced for her time, and her thoughts in the Frankenstein novel are way above her age and time. Overall, a very good book. It was slow for me at first but soon got detailed and then i wanted to read more.
