First published in 1914, the story centers on Ingeborg who grows up being pushed around by her father, the Bishop. In the first moment she is ever alone and left to her own devices, she decides to take a trip to Switzerland. She is alone for only a few hours, however, and then the next overpowering man comes into her life, a German pastor. Through no effort or even desire of her own she somehow becomes his wife and begins yet another journey in pursuit of control of her life. Includes 8 illustrations by Arthur Litle.
I agree with Hallgerds review of this book. It is quite lighthearted for the most part, certainly different from most books. Didn't take as long to read as I thought it would usually takes me a long time to get through a book that has over thirty five chapters. I liked her husband, out of her way most of the time, but made appearances when really necessary. His attitude, towards his mother/women in general, was quite funny. Maybe it helps to be in a mild mood while reading the book !! Some readers may find the ending incomplete, but I thought it was a hoot.
Louise, you're probably most certainly right about being in a light mood while reading. Perhaps also due to taking a very long time reading it with breaks, I didn't catch the lightness and just felt depressed. I'm sure I took it too seriously!
