Published in 1848, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is the second and final novel by Anne Brontë. The story is told both by Helen Graham, a young widow, and the man who falls in love with her. By using both male and female narrators, Brontë underlines the sexual double standards at the time while providing a powerful, haunting, and disturbing story. This ebook is also part of The Brontë Collection compilation ebook.
I vastly prefer Anne Bronte's work to that of her sisters, especially this book. This novel directly attacks the social structure which gave power to unworthy men at the expense of worthy women, and justifies the right of a woman to protect the morality of her home and her children by any means necessary. Another note is that the characterization of Helen's husband could be seen as a refutation against the romanticism of a wild, passionate, selfish man seen in Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre.
My comment is solely about this edition. While I love this cover, I must say that this edition is incomplete. Gilbert's opening letter to Jack Halford and chapter headings are omitted there.
