Regardless of her motives, I liked Zoe's approach. Rebuilding the barn gets Qwill's attention, pleases the fans, and allows Anne to take the story line in several different directions, depending upon where she wants to go. By taking romance off the table with a business proposition Zoe can get close to Qwill as a partner to rebuilding his life, starting with the barn. He may also be open to her suggestions because he's had quite a few failures of communications with Fran Brodie when it comes to the design issue. He may be wanting to find someone with whom he can agree in matters of taste.

Joyce, great points!! I think Qwill will go for the rebuild of the barn with perhaps a few modifications because he did enjoy living in downtown Pickax. With Polly gone, do you think he would still want to go winter at the condo?

I think he would still want to winter at the condo for two reasons. First, the rock structure of the barn is probably still in place, so it would still be hard to heat. Of course if he put his primary living quarters on top and left the lower floor for entertaining, he might be more comfortable wintering in the barn. Second, however, he enjoys the company Joe Bunker (Weatherby Goode) and the other residents. Having people in proximity probably mitigates the isolation one feels on cold gray snowy winter days.

I got so busy with work this month I completely forgot about my Zoe Lambeth story. I think I will try to write more and go off on a wild tangent.

That night, Qwilleran sat at his desk with the portfolio Zoe had given him. As he leafed through the pages he was quite impressed with what he saw. The pleasent aroma of orange blossums and apples coming from the portfolio caused him to have some rather intense dreams that night. He woke up refreshed and shook his head at the slight memories of these dreams. After feeding the cats, he dressed and called G. Alan Barter at his home before he left for the office. "Bart," Qwill said, "I have something rather urgent. Could I drop by early, before your appointments?" "I can stop by your condo on the way in if it is that important," said Bart. G. Alan Barter was the Qwill's attorney. He lived in the Hummocks, not far from Qwill's condo in Indian Village. Qwill

activated the computerized coffee maker and thawed some Scottish sweet bread from the freezer. It was a new item he picked up from the Scottish Bakery in town the week before. He set out two mugs and cut the bread on a wooden cutting board and set them out on the kitchen bar. He made some copies from Zoe's portfolio on the portable copier he kept in the condo office. He stapled the copies to one of the business cards zoe had in a pocket in the front of the portfolio.
By the time he finished, Bart was ringing the doorbell.

After explaining to Bart that he wanted the people and company listed in the portfolio from California investigated, Qwill saw him to his car. As soon as Bart pulled out, Qwill got in his own car and drove to Lois' for a more proper breakfast and a second cup of coffee. He joined Hixie, who he found eating alone in a booth and said, "You will not believe who is in Pickax." Well Qwill, you must be talking about Zoe Lambreth. I thought the name sounded familiar when he name was submitted for temporary art director. It took almost an entire day and then I realized.......Lambreth gallery down below, her husband murdered, a cloud of suspesion around her......and then to find out a friend of hers was the murderer and she had been having an........hold on Hixie, slow down, Qwill stopped her. Take a breath.
Well, you asked, she said impudently. And that friend of hers was a ....Hixie changed her voice to a whisper and leaned in......a Lesbian....not that I don't say live and let live, but you know Qwill, I adore men and I could never understand lesbians. Yes Hixie he replied , your adoration of the opposite sex is legendary. Hump Hixie said, well, you don't have to be insulting. She laughed.

Well Qwill, do you have any idea why someone like Zoe would come to Moose County. Don't get me wrong I am happy here, but we are not exactly her cup of tea. Hixie, I have no idea, he said, but I think it has to do with a doctor's suggetion for her health. He did not mind making up slight fibs when the need arose. Well rumor has it she was seen dining with you last night, so I thought you would know. Qwill never seemed to get over the amazement at the speed the Pickax gossip mill could move. Well, Carol Lanspeak saw you and she told Larry, who told Dwight at a theater club meeting last night, who saw me this morning on the sidewalk. So she is ill you say? Hogwash. She looks perfectly healthy. Qwill snorted, looks can be deceiving Hixie, maybe she came to bathe herself in skunk water for its healing powers....at that Hixie swatted at him, as their food arrived.

In reality, Qwill was very intrigued by Zoe Lambreth, her portfolio and her suggeston. He was at loose ends with his life. His barn was gone, Polly was gone and more recently Barbara, a nice woman he had just started to get to know had moved away. A project like rebuilding something where the ruins of the barn stood would certainly be a challenge and get his juices flowing. And it might provide material for several Qwill pen columns. He could move back to the apartment over the garage in downtown Pickax for the spring and enjoy being right downtown again. Yes, this idea had merit. He would be anxious to hear what his attorney found out about Zoe and her associates. But what to build on the barn site. Should he have the remainder of the stones buldozed and start from scratc or build on the remains of the stone foundation the fire could not burn?
The barn had been the one residence he had never grown tired of, one of the few constants in his life that was always there, other than the cats.
He walked into Amanda's design studio and asked to use the phone. One of Amanda's assistants was there and they recognized him and said yes. He did it just because it irritated Amanda, but she was nowhere to be seen this morning. He rang the McIntosh Inn and asked for Zoe's room. He thought she would still be getting ready for work, probably not going to the Art center until after 9.

He was wrong. He left the studio and started to get into his car. Since he had been at the condo, he had not been walking as much as he liked. He decided to cross Park circle and walk up the driveway to the theatre club. He walked passed the garage apartment that belong to him. He unlocked the iron gates that led to the burned out barn and kept going. He quickly arrived at the ruins. He stood there for a long time and looked. It looked stark and sad. A shell of the residence he had come to enjoy with the cats. Even the gazebo was gone. He could not leave it like this. He needed to have the property totally cleared, or build something. Maybe not another barn. Maybe there could never be another barn. What else? One house in Zoe's portfolio had caught his attention last night. It was an A frame type structure of redwood with a soaring roof that came to a point like the structure was a big triangle. It had a stone base.
It was a dramatic home. He had seen one of similar desisn in the Potato Mountains years ago, on Hawk's Nest Drive. It had a waterfall. But the home had been an A frame design. His mustache twitched and he tamped it with one fist. He had hesitated this past year to consider rebuilding until the arsonist had been caught. He was happy in his condo, and sometimes spending the night at the apartment over the garage, and an occasional weekend at the cabin at the lake. He did not need another home. Perhaps he should build something to donate to the city. He walked on past the ruin and down the path toward Trevelyn Road and the Art Center.

Qwill entered the Art Center and tapped on the manager's office doorframe. Zoe was behind the desk reading a periodical. She looked up and smiled. Qwill, lovely to see you this morning. I enjoyed our conversation last night. I had forgotten how easy you are to talk to. It crossed Qwill's mind that his appearance at the Art Center this early in the morning might be considered "overly eager", but it was to late now. And he did not feel like playing games, his interest and imagination had been stirred by Zoe's suggestions and portfolio and he was a man of quick decisions. Zoe, I would like to talk to you some more about your proposal. Excellent she said, most enthusiastically. Sit down Qwill. Please sit. He said, no, not right now, I was thinking of dinner tonight. There is a quaint resturant not far from here called the Old Grist Mill. Would you honor me with your company this evening and we can talk then. I would be delighted she said. I will pick you up at 6:30 Zoe. I look forward to it. I did not realize there would be nice resturants in the country. I see I have alot to learn. I would be honored to be your tour guide and host for your introduction to "country living" Zoe. Oh that is an offer I can't refuse she said with a laugh. Qwill left with a quick step and he almost whistled, stopping himself in the knick of time. Whistling was illegal in Pickax, he had learned when he first moved to town. Chuckling to himself he could imagine, since he himself came from down below, what misconceptions Zoe might have about the "country".

Several days later, and several interesting dinners with Zoe Lambreth later, G. Alan Barter called and asked if he could drop by one morning. Qwill agreed and turned on the coffee maker. The attorney arrived soon after and handed him the portfolio. He informed Qwill that Sven and Maurgerite Svorn had checked out. The portfolio did contain real photographs of work they had done. They had an excellent reputation throughout the nation. They had projects in many states. Maurerite taught part time at a university in California, and Sven voluntered with building houses for the homeless as a hobby. There firm was prosperous and Zoe Lambreth, as well had checked out. Qwill thanked him and as he closed the door he realized he had made up his mind. He would do something very controversial in Moose County. He would hire outsiders to design, build and decorate a residence where the barn once stood. But it would not be a residence for himself. He did not think he could ever live there again, where his barn had stood. Any other residence would pale in comparison for him. He was happy with his garage apartment, his condo and his cabin. He would have them build it as a living lab for an architecture and design department for the Moose County Community College and he would use the K fund to endow the college with scholarship money to make it work. The structure would be used for students to study and learn building and design for years to come. He would tap into Sven Svorn's genius to decide how this would work. He could use Maurgerites knowlege of teaching in a college and he could keep Zoe around for a long time, as the structure was being built. He had heard Fran talk about a design competition on televsion recently. The design apprentices remodeled rooms in a "lab house" over and over. He could picture a structure that would be repainted and redecorated each semester as new students practiced their art. ...........Fran......Fran.....she had been talking about the television show, just then Qwill thought..........What will Fran have to say about me bringing in a designer from out of state? Will she appreciate what I am doing, creating a school of design within MCCC? Or will she see this as a rebuff of her design skills. Qwilleran thought..........not if I make her think it is her idea!
He smiled to himself at Amanda potential reaction. He had so many ideas, and the Qwill columns he could get out of this would be inumerable. He had not been this excited in a long time. Yowwwww said Koko.......Nowwww said Yum yum as they picked up on his mood. He heard scratching and turned as Koko began using Zoe's portfolio for a scratching pad.

When Qwill walked into the offices of the Moose County Something later, Arch Riker, general manager, stopped him. Do you realize you are humming? What is that song? And get out of here with that noise, we are trying to turn out a newpaper. All right, let me hand in my copy and I will be out of your hair. I thought I might drink a cup of coffee while I am here, but I can leave. You can have your coffee, but keep the noise down, and that will be 1.00 for the coffee. A dollar Qwill said, then I need a raise. Qwill followed Arch into the break room and Arch said, well, news around here today is how the Qwill Pen has been seen almost every night out with a mysterious beautiful woman, who dresses like she does not shop at Lanspeaks.
I have been playing the gallent host to Ms. Lambreth who is new to our area and interested in the history of our humble "countryside"
Humph, Arch commented. Well have you found out what she is doing here? It can't be to run a small town art center. AS a matter of fact I have Arch and you can read all about it in an announcement that is forthcoming in your newspaper in a few weeks. And with that Qwill walked out of the office and headed for his car.

I really like the idea of Qwill revisiting the barn and pondering his options regarding rebuilding. I also like the idea of his fixing up the garage apartment for himself, since he enjoyed spending the summers in town.

Anne, this is absolutely wonderful!! And so like Qwill!! Yet there was that mustache tingling sensation which indicates that trouble is brewing on the horizon. Can't wait to read more!! I still don't trust that Zoe. Surprised

Thank you so very much! Writing is very time-consuming, although also very rewarding.

Reading is the fun part. Writing is hard, especially keeping track of all the things that go on in Qwill's life and in Pickax. I have enjoyed your story greatly. This is how I deal with Cat Who withdrawal, so I owe you a debt of gratitude.

Sorry for the triple post, My computer hiccuped.

Here goes.......

The next day was Saturday and Qwill had an appointment with Lisa Compton to ride out to West Middle Hummock and interview the group mothers at a home for mentally challenged adults, the K fund had partially funded, matching county money. Lisa was on the board of directors and Qwill planned to write a Qwill pen column about the home.

He picked Lisa up and they arrived 10 minutes early for their 10 am appointment. After interviewing the woman, Qwill invited Lisa to lunch on the way back. Lisa wanted to go to Oonosh's and Qwill agreed. They dined on wonderful Greek food and the conversation led to the new temporary Art director. Qwill told Lisa he had known her "down below" and she was an aquaintance. Lisa commented on her wardrobe, "Parisian" and her beauty, "stunning". Qwill said, "Lisa, let me bounce an idea off you." "Sure Qwill," she said. "I am considering building something to benefit the college on the barn site. I was thinking of a department of architecture and/or design. The surrounding gardens where the apple orchard once stood could be used for outdoor art or perhaps an ampetheatre, maybe even garden landscaping could be taught." Qwill that is so very generous of you. I think it is a splendid idea. But are you sure you will not want to rebuild the barn and live there. Perhaps another type residence? "
Lisa, this idea is new, so I cannot say I have given it alot of thought, but I make decisions quickly and do not allow myself to regret with "what ifs". I think I will speak to Bart about a proposal for the K fund. He can involve the college and local specialist in design, art and architecture. And perhaps landscape design. I will talk to the Theatre Club board about the posibility of an ampetheater. Perhaps all this would be to much and they could scale it down to the most needed areas. Qwill with all the snow in the fall, winter and early spring, and the mosquitos in the late spring and summer on into early fall, I am not sure how much use an outdoor ampitheater would get in Moose County!
