I just read a story in the May 30-June 5 issue of “The Economist†magazine (yeah, I’m a little behind in my reading) about a town that sounds a lot like Pickax. I thought perhaps one of you writers might want to work an idea like this into your story.
The town is Colebrook, in forested northen New Hampshire. It appears the town was hit hard by recession, so paper milling is now a dead industry, a lot of furniture factory workers have been laid off their jobs and the Ford dealership has closed. Thus, people are having a hard time there. But one bright spot in town was the unique French bakery run by two genuine Parisians. The only trouble was that their E2 visas were up for extension, and the State Department didn’t think that their business had enough economic impact to warrant renewal.
What the State Department didn’t realize is that the little French boulangerie served as the community center, hosting concerts and serving as the main stop for local gossip.
Insensed at the thought of losing the bakery, the town manager managed to round up two pounds of letters from locals declaring support for the French business. The State Department relented, and the bakers are now planning their baking schedule for all the extra baguettes needed for Colebrook’s Moose festival in August.

Story ideas:
*Celia's husband and Qwill's long time handy man passes away. Celia decides to do some of the things she has always wanted to before it is to late. She gets back to active envolvement in some of Qwill's investigations. She also takes up sky diving or learns to pilot her own plane. She enters contests and gets accepted for a game show in New York. She meets new people and somehow ends up twisted up in one of the crimes. Qwill saves the day for her.
*Susan Exbridge makes a play for Qwill not that Polly is gone. She tries to become what he may want to nab him. He falls for it for just a bit, flattered, then when he figures her out, has a hard time shaking her.
*Derek inherits Liz's money, and goes down below to sow wild oats. He gets in trouble at a resturant he buys in Las vegas with the mob. He runs to hide in Pickax, but they send someone after him. He hides out in Qwill's condo for a night and the mob breaks in, only to be confronted with Koko's clasw.
*The new manager of the Pirate's Chest, after Polly decamps to France becomes very close to Qwill, eating out, reading books together. When accusations from the K fund accuse her of embezelment, he is unsure whether she is quilty and whether to support her or not. He decides to launch his own investigation. He discovers some things in her past he did not know.
*The McIntosh Inn has a new manager. A woman. She is a very interesting single middle aged woman. Qwill asks her to dinner several times and she rebuffs him. When they are trapped in the bookstore together with a few employees, during a power outage, she finally talks to him and he gets to know her.
Dear Susan, writer of the story about Laura......remember to make it a mystery.......to much congenial love story is not the LJB way. I applaud your writing. More fans should write. It is only when you write you realize how difficult it is to take ideas to fruition. Anne, I would love for you to write more on your story. Thanks for the forum.

I love all these ideas!
I thought I would brainstorm crime and villan scenerios.
-A child is snatched by a non custodial parent?
-Quack physician moves to town and does bad face lifts and flees?
I am laughing out loud at myself right now, everything I think of has already been covered by Lilian Jackson Braun!
-war in Iraq comes to Pickax, when a local comes back from the war with mental problems and causes havoc?
-NY and Las Vegas mob want to control the K fund and move into Moose county with a dog track and a new garbage pick up company they control?
-Identity theft by computer is rampat in Pickax?
-Two gay teachers at the high school want to marry and the town is all abuzz?
-Hollywood comes to town to court Qwill with an offer to write a script for a docudrama on his life and he gets caught up in Hollywood types and all heck breaks loose
Has Pickax lost their favorite son to the big time?
...still laughing at myself

I am so excited that the fans are rising to the occasion to offer stories and story ideas! Karen, we gave you the fan forum, but it is you participants that make it work. I love all the story ideas here, especially the one about Celia Robinson! She is one of my favorite characters.
Is there anyone who wants Qwill to end up with Fran Brodie? It thought it would be a hoot because Qwill and Detective Brodie are so close!

Perhaps more story lines set at the cabin at the lake and in Mooseville. Pollution in the lake? Terrorists coming across the lake from Canada? A new boy scout summer camp built on the lake and strange things begin happening there?

What about Qwill ending up with Susan Exbridge? I say that just because Polly was so jealous of her. At least Susan made a life for herself after being dumped by Don Exbridge...made a life for herself and thrived. I know that in another thread she was running a meth lab and then disappeared, but somehow I just can't see her lowering her standards so low.

I know my story is a little romantic, but I did put two mysteries in, but now Qwill is getting married and I don't see how I could weave a crime into that. He and Laura have to get into their marriage and then we can have some sluething.

Susan, maybe the crime could start with their honeymoon and Koko howling his death yowl!

Susan, I think Laura should either turn out to be a villan or be murdered. I could never continue reading the series if he were married. It is just not Qwill. But I know others may have a different opinion.
