Hmmm. Your Cahoots story might work, although it might work better if Polly's husband was the perp and Laura was just stupid enough to fall for him. The reason is that we only know Polly's husband from her musings, but we know Laura from her actions. It would be harder to make her subterfuge convincing.

Well, so long. And yes, I have heard of Spencer's Mountain. I actually saw the movie with Maureen O'Hara, Henry Fonda and James MacArthur, one of my favorites when I was a teenager. I can still hear the theme song.
