I’ve just added an ebook feed so that anyone with an iPhone/iPod Touch can access and read our ebooks through the Stanza app. Here’s how to do it:

- Open the Stanza app (it’s free).
- If you’re in a book, tap on the middle of the screen and then on the back arrow at the top left to go to the Library.
- Click on the bottom icon titled “Get Books”
- Now go to the top and click on the “Shared” button
- Click on the “+” sign, or if you don’t see that click "Edit" then “Add Book Source”.
- Enter “Girlebooks” for name and the following url in the second field:
girlebooks.com/ebook-catalog/ebook-feed
IMPORTANT: make sure to tap on the “Catalog” button below the url field.
- Click “Save”.

Now you’ll see Girlebooks in your “Shared” tab whenever you go to your library. I plan on organizing it a bit better so that you can browse by genre and search. Right now it just lists the ebooks that are available in Stanza format (epub) which is about 40 of them so far.

Give me your feedback if you have it!

I have been testing this on my iphone and it works. However, I had a couple of problems with the Stanza app that had to do with the controls, and with my email program, which received this post and wanted to alter the URL that Laura sent. So, in order not to have the difficulties I had, please note the following issues.

First, on the Stanza app, an item is selected when the "button" is black and not selected when it is dark blue. If you select "Web Page" instead of "Catalog" it won't work. I thought I was selecting "Catalog" but in actuality was selecting "Web Page" because I thought the dark blue button was the one that was selected.

Second, if you are reading this via email, it's best to go to the forum to get the instructions so that you get the right URL for the book feed site. I'm using Thunderbird for email and it really messed up the URL!

Third, once you get Girlebooks loaded, the "Shared" Book Sources screen will still tell you it is searching. Ignore that message under "Computers Sharing Books" and just tap the "Girlebooks" listing above it under "Book Sources". After a few seconds, the book listing will display on your screen.

Please note that the books we sell will not download via this app, although you can read the synopsis of them.

I followed the instructions, but keep getting:

Catalog Error
Error reading catalog data. Please try again later

:(

And yes, I definitely DID select the catalog (instead of 'website') button.

Hi Karen, thanks for your input!

Strange--this was working. I didn't change a thing, and now I'm getting the same error as you. Could it be a Stanza app upgrade that messed it up?

I will be fiddling with this over the weekend to see if I can get it going again.

Alternatively, here are instructions for accessing ebooks via a Box.net account. You can download ebooks from Girlebooks (in PDB or ePub format), send them to your Box.net account (free), then access those books through Stanza on your iPhone:

Create a free account at http://box.net if you don’t already have one.
Upload the ePub or eReader files to your box.net account.
In Stanza on your iPhone, go to the “Get Books” tab.
Tap the “Shared” segment and hit the plus sign.
Select “Add Web Page”.
For the name, enter “box.net”, and for the URL enter “box.net”. Tap “Save” in the upper right corner.
Select “box.net” from the “Book Sources” section.
The box.net mobile site will load in Stanza’s embedded browser. Log in with your username and password.
You should see the book(s) you uploaded. Tapping the link to the book will automatically download the file and install it in Stanza’s library.

The problem with Stanza is now fixed. Turns out the plugin I was using for rendering the mobile site was interfering with the feeds. Sorry for the technical difficulties!

This was easy to install on my iPod Touch, thanks. It's working perfectly.

I'm pleased to see you have "A Little Bush Maid" available, the first book in the Australiana Billabong series. I've read the whole series many times and love it.

I've downloaded and read several books from here. Long time visitor, first time poster <img src="http://girlebooks.com/blog/wp-content/forum-smileys/sf-smile.gif" title="Smile" alt="Smile" />

Hi Christine, and welcome! I'm glad you got this to work. I do plan on making it a little easier to browse through the catalog, but I'm figuring this out as I go, so it may take a while.

Regarding Billabong, I would love to publish some more of those. I don't think Gutenberg has all the public domain ones, so those would be good projects for our new proofreading initiative.

Thank you. You're right, Gutenberg doesn't have all the Billabong books yet. I have most of the series (clothbound) and several other books by Mary Grant Bruce, Ethel Turner and Rosalind Miller (inherited from my Grandmother). PG Australia has "Back to Billabong", but there's many books in between these two. I plan to take mine apart and scan them - one day.

I'm really happy you're teaming up with us over at Freeliterature. We have some great books scanned and ready for checking. New proofreaders will get lots of support and encouragement Smile

I've been happily downloading books from your wonderful selection to my iphone and after a few early struggles with Stanza it has been easy. But now I've run into problems. A couple of books I wanted to get today will not download. They are Rose in Bloom and The Amorist. When I get to the girlebooks catalogue on stanza, these books and others also have a grey dot next to the title. When you click on these books, you get the synopsis and a box saying "Read Now" -- no download option -- and if I click Read Now I get quite a different book! Why is this? And is there anything I can do about it? Thanks so much for girlebooks, by the way -- what a brilliant thing it is.
