Here's an article at The Guardian listing reasons why Jane Eyre should be included in a "brilliant children's library":

Remember the reivew we read of "What Katy Did?" The non-reader sister who threw the book across the room and said "Katy Did Nothing!" This sounds like the sister of the person who wrote this review--a non-reader with unusual talents.

I cringe at the thought of an edited, homogenized version of any book, forced into an artifical mold based on "age group." If a kid isn't mature enough to read the book, let it sit till they are. I read "Gone with the Wind" when I was twelve and "The Agony and the Ecstasy" not much later. Glad no one thought of dumbing them down for my "age group."

Kids are good at grasping adult situations they haven't experienced--they certainly have better imaginations than we do.

But I do think actual enjoyment of a book varies with age, and I'm talking all age groups, not just teen to adult. I find that I can not only understand but enjoy certain books a lot more in my 30s than I could in my 20s and teens. Wuthering Heights, for example. Or 1984. Or Elizabeth and Her German Garden--now there's a book with no plot, just a woman puttering around in her garden. I totally wouldn't "get it" at a younger age. Maybe even a few years ago I wouldn't get it.
