When we first meet Polly, the head librarian at the Pickax library, she's been invited to dinner by a fellow named James MacIntosh Qwilleran or Qwill, who's been in Pickax only a year and a half. Qwill can be charming and he turned it on for Polly as he was intrigued by her love of the written word and her soothing yet stimulating voice.

Qwill, described by his best friend Arch Riker as a loveable slob, who probably hasn't had new clothes except for shorts and socks in five years, his ties have holes, he drives a rattle trap used car and lives in an apartment over a garage. Why you ask would a prim proper middle aged lady accept an invitation from someone like that!? Because Polly thinks it necessary to visit the beauty shop only a couple times a year for a haircut, she too drives a used car thinking a newer one frivilous, she likes variety in her wardrobe so her three suits are in different shades of gray and she wears a white blouse to punch it up a bit and being a sensible woman her shoes are black orthopedic lace ups, she wouldn't be caught dead wearing jewelery. One can only imagine what her undergarmets look like! Surely Polly isn't influenced by Qwill being the richest person in the north central United States having inherited millions or billions, that his apartment belongs to his three story mansion filled with breath taking antiques that museums would kill for. Polly doesn't really know Qwill well, he's been in Pickax only a year and a half and she is polite but reserved; however, Qwill knows Shakespeare, is an award winning, world traveled journalist and is a voracious reader. Oh, and he thinks his cat is psychic.

Whether someone shapes his environment or is shaped by it has been argued for years. In the case of Polly Duncan, she was already a prissy, prim, proper young woman when she came to Moose County as a new bride with her husband Bob who was tragically killed early in their marriage fighting a barn fire. We know that Polly was a New Englander, her father was Orville, a Shakespeare scholar and she has two brothers and two sisters. No mention, direct or indirect, is ever made of her mother. It's as if the woman never existed, and that may be a hint as to why Polly remained in Moose County. Perhaps she found comfort and solace there and not in the bosom of her family.

To fully understand Polly you have to understand her environment, Moose County. Moose county is a land of contrasts. The residents like to say that it's 400 miles north of everywhere and that's not an exaggeration. The northern boundry of the county is a lakeshore with sand dunes several hundred feet high in some places. The lake is 100 miles across, Canada's on the other side. Moose County has thick, lush forests, acres of flat farmland, a river that gently meanders until it rushes through a gorge. It's not unusual for someone driving a beat up old pick up to raise a hand in greeting to someone driving an expensive luxury car. Though they may not mix socially, their families have known each other for generations. The county seat is Pickax, population 3000. Many of the residents are desendants of the original settlers who made fortunes in mining, lumber, shipbuilding. Everyone knows everyone else and their family histories. Rather than gossip they share information, there are no secrets.

Qwilleran, a newspaper man, and the richest man in the northern United States, had moved his household to the apple barn he lived in during warm weather. He had the barn remodeled some years ago, and during the winter months escaped to a condo that was easier to heat and keep snow shoveled. All told, he was a person who enjoyed a change in residence and the move twice a year did not bother him at all. He was, he thought, glad to be back in the barn with it soaring ramps and voluminus spaces. His companion was talking and he brought his attention back to her. Polly was saying........Have you met the new MCCC president? He was introduced at a Literary Club meeting last week. The one you missed when you were in Lockmaster. Qwill had visited some friends in Lockmaster, a neighboring county and stayed late for a dinner with the editor of the Lockmaster Legend, the community's newspaper. Polly went on.....he was very.......interesting. He is around .......fifty five I would guess, very distinquished looking and was wearing what appeared to be an Italian suit.

The smell of summer was in the air in Moose County, four hundred miles north of anywhere. Trees were green and summer tree frogs sang at dark, children out of school played outside and their laughter could be heard around town. For two cats, summer meant open windows, and long days on window sills taking in sounds, sights and smells that had not been around for a long time. Canadian geese making their way back north, cardinals, robins soaring and singing delighted the cats. These two particular cats, enjoyed a screened gazebo, one early summer afternoon, as they luxuriated on the cool cement floor. Above them, their owner, Jim Qwilleran entertainned his favorite companion with a late lunch of roasted chicken sandwiches with slices of swiss cheese, sweet gerkins and potato salad rich with eggs and mustard. Jim Qwilleran raised a glass of Squank water, a local spring water and gave a toast, as Polly Duncan, manager of the only bookstore in town, raised a glass of cranberry juice. To an enjoyable summer ahead, he said, and they touched their glasses together.

Celia Robinson O'Dell and Patrick O'Dell have retired from the catering business, Mr. O'Dell still has his home maintenence business but has hired a full time manager to run it since they neither are "spring chickens" anymore. Celia's grandson Clayton moved to Pickax as soon as he graduated high school and enjoyed a loving enriching relationship with his grandmother and step granddad. He enrolled in Moose County Community College, graduated at the top of his class, was accepted into MIT where he graduated at the top of his class in astrophysics. Now at 23 years old, he's working on deep space exploration and is engaged to a wonderful girl who also loves Celia and Pat. Celia gleefully continues to be Qwill's secret agent.

Oh my goodness, look at my head swell! Thanks for the kind praise. I guess reading TCW books over the years has rubbed off, I truly have no talent just a vivid imagination . It amazes me how LJB could weave so many threads in a story and tie them all up neatly at the end. I think when the stories got less and less layered was when I suspected all was not well with her, bless her heart. Anyhow, I'm just having fun imagining "what if".

You have such wonderful ideas, do you have time to turn them into a series of books here in the fan fiction site. I would be the first to read them. Your humor and imagination is wonderful. Keep it up. Praline. PS, thanks for your kind comment about my book: From polly's point of view

As an FYI, Weatherby Goode was inspired, I believe, by a Detroit weather icon named Sonny Elliott who gives accurate but goofy weather reports, recites poetry slipped in between the temperature and humidity. Sonny has been in Detroit for years. During World War 2 he was a pilot, still is, was shot down over either France or Germany and was a POW a couple years. He's an upbeat, positive, really decent guy. I have no idea if he and LJB knew each other but I'm sure she listened to his weather reports.

Hixie Rice and Joe Bunker aka Weatherby Goode got married. They had a large church wedding and reception since both are so well known in the county, they honeymooned in Tahiti and within 6 months of returning to Pickax they bought the local radio station. Neither one talked much about money or finances, only Big Mac the accountant knew their financial worth, but each one being thrifty had accumulated a very nice nest egg. They made a few changes to the station, more in depth news reporting, some talk shows, classical music during the day, jazz during the evening, and best of all some old radio classics like Fibber McGee & Molly, My Gal Sunday, Mystery Theatre.

With all the improvements Pickax and Moose County have experineced due to the K Foundation, people are moving to Pickax realizing it's a good place for families, excellent education, no drugs, almost crime free. A couple of new housing developments have sprung up, unfortunately, Shantytown still exists, a new elementary school has been built, enrollment at MCCC is thriving. Fortunately, Qwill has moved on from dressing in jumpsuits and warm up suits to more stylish chino's and polo shirts, he drives an American made 4 wheel drive, bright red SUV and has taken up cross country skiing. The Something publishes daily and Straight from the Qwill Pen is 3 days a week much to everyone's delight.

The school superintendant formerly known as Sourpuss, Lyle Compton, has turned into a smiling, beaming, walks with a spring in his step man. What's to account for this amazing transformation? Parenthood. Several years into their marriage, Lyle & Lisa accepted that they would be childless so when Lisa went to Dr. Diane with nausea, abdominal bloating she was expecting a diagnosis of some dread disease. Lisa & Lyle were floored when the diagnosis was "parenthood". Lyle came home with stacks of books on pregnancy, child raising, home delivery vs hospital delivery, he made sure Lisa sat with her feet up, didn't tire herself, he bacame an expert on what a pregnant woman should eat.... in otherwords he became a bore. They now have 7 year old fraternal twins, a boy, a girl who are doted on, borderline spoiled, but overall ok.

Susan Exbridge is even more successful with her antiques business, she goes from strength to strength and is an appraiser on Antiques Roadshow. She still calls everyone “Darling”, and though she opened a branch in New York, Pickax is home. Junior Goodwinter is active in his kids school activities, was president of the PTA (or PTO)for a few years and is now teaching journalism at MCCC. The art center seems to thrive despite the Trevelyan Curse. Barb Ogilve manages it and it has recived national awards due to the efforts of Barb and Mildred Riker. Lenny Inchpot is a Rock Star!! No one knew about his talent except his mom, Lois, he won American Idol and is now touring the USA and Europe. Lois goes along during the winter to escape the weather which is aggravating her arthritis due to the long years on her feet. Thornton Haggis is continuing the historian activities of Homer Tibbit and the K Foundation will soon publish the first book of Moose County History by Homer Tibbit, co- author Thornton. There have been efforts to open a McDonald’s and extend the nearest freeway, or thru way (depending on what part of the country you live in) to Moose County, both of which were resoundingly put down. And Polly Duncan is rarely if ever even thought about.
