Reading Udolpho will increase your understanding of Northanger Abbey tenfold! The first time I read it, I kept saying, "So THAT'S why she wrote that..." There are definite parallels in the plots. All of the "horrid novels" named by Isabella Thorpe that I've read so far are echoed in NA, though.

I'd love to hear what you have to say about it, Nicola. As someone into "What Jane Read", Udolpho should be near the top of the list!

I love your cover. I've always wanted to read it because of the Austen connection, but having read your review and the comment from Kristy it sounds like a good read in its own right.

Ann Radcliffe wrote this book before she turned 30! I was drawn into the magic of her prose and impressed with the human and spritual insights and subtleties she expertly shares with the reader. Emily and the people she encounters are quite the drama queens, but still a great read. It is gothic, romantic, poetic, and fantastical. I enjoyed the travels and descriptions of Gascony, Rousillon, Pyrenees, Italy-- a joy to read by the hearthfire.
