She does do quite a sending up! I really enjoyed her characterizations of them--especially the opening scene where they are doing their habitual rounds of imposing on the hospitality of the locals. There was one of the three, Sweeting I think, to whom she seemed to warm a little towards the end.

Lovely review. I'm very fond of Shirley, too, particularly Caroline Helstone. I read somewhere that Charlotte's husband, the Rev Arthur Bell Nicholls was delighted with her sending up of the clergy in this novel, which shows that he had a lively sense of humour.
