If your neighbor becomes ill or suffers from any other kind of bad luck, you might say you're sorry or post well-wishes on their Facebook wall, but that's about all. Having lived in big cities most of my life, I was used to living life like this. A few years ago I moved to a small, rural town. One of the first differences from city life I noticed was the outpouring of help one receives from one's neighbors. If someone is ill, has an accident, or is faced with an enormous hospital bill they can't pay, a fundraiser with donated food, drink, and entertainment is immediately planned. No one person can give a lot, but everyone together donates what they can, and it is a big help to the person who needs it.

Recently we've had some bad news from one of our authors who is also a dear friend, Farida Mestek. She is suffering from cancer and is courageously going through surgeries, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I like to think of Girlebooks as a virtual tight-knit community, one of the best of its kind, and as such I'd like to request the help of whomever would like to offer it. We've set up a fund for Farida and are accepting donations to go towards paying her treatment costs.

You as the donor you won't go away empty-handed! If you donate any amount to Farida's fund, you will receive both of Farida's ebooks, that are currently for sale in our ebook store, for free. Once your donation is processed, you will receive an email with instructions on downloading your free ebooks.

***Donations are currently closed. Thanks so much to all who donated!***

We now have two contemporary authors who have posted their books for free download on Girlebooks. The first is Sarah Pawley's novel Finding Grace.

In 1927, the world belongs to men, but Grace Langdon won't let herself be tied down by such restraints. She longs to escape the narrow, restricted life in Virginia that is sure to be hers if she stays in her community. When Grace learns her parents have arranged a marriage for her with a local young man, she runs away from home to live life on her own terms and heads for Chicago. There she meets her brother's neighbor, she begins to believe that true love might exist for her.

The second is L. Lee Lowe's Mortal Ghost.

It's a fiery hot summer, and sixteen-year-old Jesse Wright is on the run. An oddly gifted boy, he arrives in a new city where the direction of his life is about to change. He's hungry and lonely and desperate - and beset by visions of a stranger who is being brutally tortured. And then there are Jesse's own memories of a fire ...

Both novels are available for free download, in several ebook formats, from our ebook catalog. We thank these two authors for graciously contributing their books to our site.

In other news, the full length adaptation of Sense and Sensibility directed by Ang Lee is available free, online at Hulu.com (apparently this works only if you're in the US).

We've been doing some website housekeeping. Notably, our entire catalog is now available through Amazon's Kindle ebook store. See a listing of the Kindle ebooks available here.

I acquired a Kindle recently, so I can give a mini-review of it here. After years of reading on my PDA, it is quite pleasant to read on the Kindle's larger screen. The clarity of the font is remarkable. The main drawback for me is not being able to read in the dark--I like reading in bed and not bothering my husband, or just dropping off to sleep when I felt like it, not having to turn off the light. Aside from that, I am pleased. It is much smaller and more ergonimic than I imagined. With it's included leather cover closed, it looks like a datebook. I'm also looking forward to having Amazon's large ebook catalog at my disposal. There's still no Georgette Heyer or Wide Sargasso Sea, but I'm confident the selection will widen with time. If you're curious about the Kindle, you can read more about it on Amazon's website.

In other site news, we now have a slick rating and review system for our ebook catalog. On each ebook detail page, there is a place for you to add your star rating and, optionally, your review of the ebook. Click here to go to our ebook catalog and add your rating or review! We hope you like the changes, and now back to publishing ebooks.

I simply had to share some recent news I've been reading on AustenBlog about the new Jane Austen movie, Becoming Jane.

First is a great review by Anne Wagner of The Stranger:

There isn't one irritating thing about Becoming Jane, there are about fifty. Even if you don't care that Anne Hathaway is way too pretty to play Jane Austen--who in the most flattering of her alleged portraits is shown with squinty little eyes--there is the fact that the erstwhile star of The Princess Diaries is grating. You may find it disturbing that Jane wears empire-waisted styles not yet popularized; it is also possible that you will disapprove when Jane Austen's chumpish father performs oral sex on her unimpressed mother. (No, I'm not kidding.) And if you've seen a single other Austen adaptation in the last 10 years, particularly 2005's Pride & Prejudice, you'll be appalled at director Julian Jarrold's shameless pilfering--shots, situations... The very plot of Pride & Prejudice is lifted wholesale and wedged between the known facts of Jane Austen's life. Of course, that dimwitted strategy is stolen too, from 1998's Shakespeare in Love. Thanks, Tom Stoppard.

Why do we need to believe that authors lived their own stories? Are we so envious of their towering talents that we have to deny their ability to fabricate plot? (It's especially ridiculous that we've done this to Jane Austen and William Shakespeare--of all writers in the English language, they are perhaps least known for simply devising plotlines.) Whatever the motivation, the result is dull. And if you can imagine Jane Austen falling in love with a man who seduces her with a description of mating chickadees--well, let me put it this way: You must be thinking of the other Brontë.

Now read this hilarious satire. I have to say that at first I was a little curious about seeing this movie--but after reading the satire, I think I know too much already!
